Elephant Games brings us the new Hidden Object Adventure about a little woman from our childhood fairy tales. In Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love, players must help Thumbelina on her quest to save her prince from a cruel fate. After being kidnapped by an evil queen, the prince was taken away from his wedding day with Thumbelina and it is up to you to help them reunite with each other.
This tale starts at the location of what would’ve been their wedding that is until the evil queen decides to steal the prince away. Now the test of finding your way through the castle and the kingdom comes as you traverse this magical world. Using the navigation arrows, a hand and a magnifying glass you can look through areas of interest and find clues to help on your journey. Once the player finds the objective within their area, they are introduced to a hidden object scene where they must find the objects indicated in their task list. Like most hidden object games, Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love has a straight forward game play where objects can be revealed by clicking on them through the cursor on screen. Once an item has been successfully found, it disappears and its name on the task list also vanishes indicating it has been crossed out the list. Once all the objects are found, the player will have completed the puzzle and can earn special items to put into their inventory which will help them later on the game.
In the game screen, players will be able to access the menu which contains the game settings, the inventory that contains all the special items the player has found and magical mirror which gives hints, should the player find it too difficult to move forward. Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love also comes with a handy map that shows current goals, areas that have been explored, highlighted places that need a second look and provides a way of moving from one place to another without having to do all the back tracking. The level of hints available also depends upon the mode of play chosen; from casual for those who are new to the genre, to advanced for those seeking a challenge and hardcore, for experts who don’t need hints, tips or help of any kind.
The graphics offered in Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love are quite well suited to the game, it has enough attention to details to make the hidden object scenes challenging to complete. The great use of background imagery also helps take the players back to a time when fairy tales existed. The use of the music was also very convincing with a mildly eerie tone, welcoming the presence of the evil witch.
All in all, Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love manages to deliver a solid hidden object adventure game with great attention to details and eye catching graphics. Combined with great gameplay mechanics and a fairy tale storyline to boot, it certainly paved its way through the hidden object genre.
