A series of murders rocked the once-quiet town in Warwick, Scotland, and the police are completely baffled. This intriguing case has attracted the interest of world-renowned psychic, Conrad MacDowell, his equally-distinguished colleagues, and his new apprentice, a young, local journalist named Nathan Crowley.
Playing as Nathan, you’ll need to work with Conrad and his fellow psychics, as you all attempt to identify the suspects behind as many murders as you can and hopefully secure enough clues that will lead you to the real culprit that had been possessing people and forcing them to kill.
The gameplay in Mysterium: A Psychic Clue Game is pretty easy to grasp. What you’ll need to do as a psychic is to commune with the ghost via a seance and through the visions you get, you’ll need to help him or her identify the murderer, the crime scene, and the murder weapon (stage by stage in that order). It plays out a bit like a game of Clue, but with a more supernatural twist.
However, these vision cards that you get are incredibly abstract and it can be quite difficult to guess what the ghost is actually trying to convey. Of course, the variety of cards available, especially if you purchase any of the game’s many additional content, is also sufficient enough to keep the game interesting and challenging for most. Because of this, you may need to use a lot of deep thinking in addition to having a healthy dash of luck.
The game also has a “Clairvoyant Points” system where you can look at the visions other psychics in your team have and decide if their guesses are correct or wrong. If your guesses are accurate, then you’ll earn clairvoyant points which will in turn determine how many hints you’ll get in the final round of the game.
What if you’ve guessed incorrectly? Well, if that happens, you simply need to guess again. Most of the time, you’ll get a little bit of help every time you failed a round while other psychics in the team have moved on to the later stages – the game will eliminate suspects, locations and weapons that have been correctly identified by others.
That aside, the cards in this game can be a bit small, especially if you’re playing the game on your smartphone. Due to this, you can actually tap and hold to bring up the magnifier which will help enlarge any tiny detail in a card that you might have missed.
Once all the 3 clues have been found, you should have multiple scenarios (sets of suspects, locations and weapons) reconstructed by each of the psychics in the team. The ghost will then send you 3 visions – each of which correspond with the actual suspect, location and weapon. Needless to say, you’ll need to identify the correct set.
As interesting as this game may sound, I personally find that playing as a Ghost to be a whole lot more fun and challenging than playing as a psychic. This is mainly because you’ll quickly realize that your train of thought may not be shared by the people or AIs playing as psychics in the game and hence, you’ll definitely need to do a whole lot more deep thinking. Thankfully, ghosts don’t have a time limit and can take their sweet time in deciding which vision cards to send.
Mysterium: A Psychic Clue Game also has 2 game modes for you to enjoy playing, namely the story mode, which basically doubles as a tutorial of sorts, and the multiplayer mode that can be further separated into various sub-modes including Quick Play, Online, Blitz (shorter time limit), Pass and Play, and solo custom games with AIs.
If you’re playing with other human players as a psychic, you’ll gain access to a chat system where you all can discuss about your suspicions. However, this cooperative part of the gameplay ends at the final round of the game where the final winners will be decided.
Since the game is based on an actual physical card game, Mysterium: A Psychic Clue Game has some really nice hand-drawn art. I’d say the quality of the visuals in this game does its physical counterpart justice. The soft yet eerie background music is also a really nice touch. It sets the chilling atmosphere of a supernatural-themed game perfectly.
All in all, Mysterium: A Psychic Clue Game is an excellent digital version of its original physical game that you can play while on the go since it’s also available on mobile. This game managed to capture the challenge of having to really wreck your brain while trying to figure out what the ghost wanted to show you. Despite the rather grim atmosphere which is inherent in any paranormal games, this can be a really entertaining game for a family with slightly older kids as well.
